Asia's Rugged Buffer: Afghanistan in a 1956 Life Magazine (7 images)

While combing through the attic of a next door neighbor this summer, I came upon a 1956 issue of Life magazine with a cover story photoessay on Afghanistan in the context of the geopolitics of the day. An interesting look at what has changed, and not changed, for a country that has been at the heart of US foreign policy in the region for decades now. All photos are credited to David Douglas Duncan, the writer is uncredited by the magazine.
