On a mission to reach the self-declared Republic of Somaliland where I was to do research for an international law Master's thesis I traveled east from Addis Abbaba, the capital of Ethiopia, on a French colonial four-car train transporting qat--a leafy green amphetamine grown in the Ethiopian highlands--to ravenous chewers in the Muslim coastal countries of Djibouti and Somalia.
